Door to Door Scams

Written 17/02/04

Once again certain villages are being leafleted by OLONEX Ltd who seem relentless in their pursuit to con the general public out of their possessions. Although they may have changed the wording on the leaflet (very small writing at the bottom) they are not licensed to do a house-to-house collection in this district, so I would urge you not to give them anything as they are breaking the law.

Please remember in all cases House-to-House collectors should hold a prescribed Certificate of Authority and Badge from the HMSO (the badge is small and green) and a licence from South Cambridgeshire District Council that will state the person(s) name, address and details of collection. If you are in any doubt of someone's authenticity the best policy is to ask for proof they are a bona fide collector, and any person will provide proof if they have nothing to hide. Please contact the Licensing Office on 443024 or 443132 for us to check the register and confirm who is collecting etc in your area.

Another problem in South Cambs Villages are "Bag" sellers - these people are NOT Licensed. They go from house to house trying to sell Ironing board covers, dusters etc, and spin a yarn about being on a program for offenders trying to get back to work. This is a scam, they are not allowed to sell in this area without a Pedlars Licence from Cambridge Police. These people will flash a home-made ID badge with their photo on - this is NOT a badge of authority, if they cannot produce a pedlars licence or badge from the Police it is not legal for them to sell. There have been several cases of "bullying" type of behaviour by these people, whereby the public feel obliged to buy just to get rid of them - don't fall for it, you have the right to say no. These people are not selling for charity but for themselves.

If you have any information on this or any other unlicensed collectors please do not hesitate to let the Licensing section know so we can deal with them in the appropriate manner.
