Residents, cyclists, drivers and bus users are being urged to have their
say on changes proposed for busy Milton Road on the other side of the
A14.
The package of modifications put forward by Cambridgeshire County Council
aims to tackle problems of growing delays to bus services and general traffic.
Journey-time surveys carried out by the county council show it currently
takes a vehicle up to 15 minutes to travel to and from the A14 interchange
at peak travel times.
The Cambridge Science Park and Cowley Road junctions are particularly badly
affected. More than thirty bus services also use Milton Road at peak periods.
The proposals to tackle congestion include:
A dedicated left-turn lane on the northbound approach to the A14/Milton
Interchange to reduce delays especially to traffic leaving the Cambridge
Science Park
A northbound bus lane between Frazer Road and Kings Hedges Road to
tackle current delays for outbound bus services
Altering the traffic signal lay-out at the entrance to the Science Park
to two right hand lanes and one ahead lane to reduce southbound queues
Widened, segregated paths for pedestrians and cyclists from Woodhead
Drive to Kings Hedges Road
None of the trees on Milton Road will be removed as a result of these
proposals.
Local residents, interest groups and businesses will shortly be receiving
details of the schemes through their letterboxes along with a questionnaire
asking for their comments. They are also being invited to view the proposals
at exhibitions at the Q-ton centre on the Science Park, the Cowley Road Park
and Ride site and St Georges Church on Chesterfield Road from Thursday
February 6 to Thursday 13th. They will also be at the Community Centre in
the village on Monday, 17th February.
Comments can also be emailed to a dedicated email address -
The closing date for comments is March 10th and a decision on the project
is expected in April after the results of the consultation are known.
County Councillor for Milton Jane Coston said: "These proposals will improve
bus journey times and reliability as well as easing congestion for drivers
and giving cyclists a safe route. The dedicated lane onto the A14 slip road
will be especially welcomed by locals. Pedestrians will also have a wider
footpath to use along the section in question."
Councillor Julian Huppert who represents East Chesterton, said: "Please let
us know what you think of these ideas. Come to one of the public exhibitions,
send in a consultation form or email us."
