The CHUMMS study produced its recommendations today. The news is mixed. On
the plus side the only new road they're proposing is well north of us where
they're proposing to re-route the A14 three lanes wide running south of
Fenstanton, Godmanchester, Huntingdon and Brampton so the threat of
Strategy 3 appears to have diminished.
However they are recommending widening the A14 to three lanes each way on
its existing route westwards past Bar Hill and, more significantly for us,
to three lanes along the Cambridge Northern Bypass as well, as far as the
Fen Ditton junction. This includes the A14 past Milton, which will bring the
road nearer to the village and increase noise levels, especially from the
elevated section east of the A14/A10 junction.
Other proposals include using the old Cambridge-St Ives railway line as a
guided bus route, with extensions to Huntingdon and into Cambridge and new
roads running parallel to the widened A14 to the west of Girton interchange
for local traffic with modifications to junctions 13 and 14 of the M11.
There's also a suggestion that there may be a park and ride site north of us
at Waterbeach.
An update on the CHUMMS study is
available online
and that includes a link to
this page
which explains the recommendations in detail.
Timescales for all of this are long, with the guided bus route being
expected in five years, and the road improvement in five to ten years.
