Incinerator Threat

Written 17/06/01

Those of you who wrote to the Waste Planning Authority (WPA) opposing the designation of the sewage works in the Waste Local Plan as a site suitable for an incinerator should by now have had a response asking if it meets your objections in full, in part or not at all.

The parish council had the same response. The WPA have not made any changes to their plans and worse, have left us in limbo because they claim to be waiting for the outcome of the Northern Fringe Review. In addition the timescales for responses are ridiculous (in the first letter the parish council got we were given *minus* three days) and parish council said as much at the June meeting and have refused to reply until after the next PC meeting on 2nd July.

It seems to me, and this is only a personal view, that the WPA are wrong. They should be amending the plan now in line with our objections as our objections relate to the effect on Milton not the affect it will have on developments in the Northern Fringe. In particular their refusal to consider WLP9 (effect on the surrounding area) in relation to this site is unacceptable. I will be recommending to Parish Council that we respond on that basis.

As to what you should do if you've had a letter: I recommend you write back and complain about the short time scale (they had nine months to consider your response, they gave you days) and that your objections stand. This will give the parish council extra ammunition at the public enquiry, even if you can't take it further yourself. You might also want to attend our Parish Council meeting on 2nd July where we will have a representative from the County Council. It starts at 7pm at the Community Centre.
