As you know SCDC's finances have been badly hit by rate capping so they're looking to make saving and one area is the Country Park. In the short term they are intending to start charging for car parking. Prices look like being £1 per day and there will also probably be a quarterly season ticket for £14. SCDC estimate they can derive an income of £35,000pa from this source.
Milton Parish Council are concerned that this may result in more visitors parking elsewhere in the village, especially in the Community Centre car park and in Fen Road but also in the industrial estate outside the park.
SCDC are also looking at improving catering to offer some sort of cafe/restaurant service in the Visitor Centre.
Dickersons Pit, Country Park
In the longer term they are considering options for managing the park including handing it over to a third party.
Cambridge Mencap, the charity which runs
Edmund House in Milton, are one of the parties interested in doing this and have actively been putting
together plans for a bid. They came to last night's parish council meeting to tell the council of their thinking to date. They propose to create a new charitable trust to run the park which would involve other local organisations too including the parish council. Their plans include dropping the car parking charge and replacing the Visitor Centre
with a new "ecological" centre with a cafe with catering facilities able to offer staff training.
SCDC are holding a consultation meeting open to everyone at the Visitor Centre on Sunday 22nd January at 2pm. If you are interested in the future of the park put it in your diary now.
