Buses

There are two bus services though Milton, the Citi 2 and the 9.

Buses to Cambridge stop at the following places through the village: at the junction of Landbeach Road and Humphries Way, opposite the Waggon & Horses, outside the New Apostolic Church/Dillons, near Barnabas Court, and opposite Tesco.

There are bus shelters at all the southbound stops in the village and at the northbound stop outside Tesco.

The County Council have details of bus timetables for the Cambridge area here.

Stagecoach in Cambridge have some details of their service online. Start here.

It's worth noting that generally speaking it's cheaper to buy a Dayrider rather than a return if you're going all the way into the city centre.

Citi 2 - Town Centre & Addenbrooke's

The Citi 2 service runs from Monday to Saturday service from Milton through Chesterton via Green End Road and Chesterton High Street into the city centre at Emmanuel Street. It then continues to Addenbrooke's hospital via Mill Road and the ring road (with a short detour into the Birdwood Road estate). See box at the bottom for full route. The entire journey takes about 50 minutes end to end.

The return service follows basically the same route except it stops in St Andrews Street rather than Emmanuel Street. It also enters the village from Landbeach Road (i.e. via the bypass) which can be a little disconcerting if you're going to Tesco.

The earliest bus from Milton departs at 06:35, another at 06:55 and they then run "frequently" at approximately ten minute intervals through the day until 18:51. Thereafter they run every half hour with the last bus into town departing at 21:51.

Coming out of town the first bus from the Addenbrooke's departs at 06:50, passing through the city centre at 07:16. The last bus home from the city centre is at 23:03.

The County Council has the timetable available on their web site in PDF format here.

Citi 2 - Complete Route

Down Landbeach Road into the high street through Milton past Tesco. Across the A10/A14 roundabout into Milton Road, left into Green End Road, left again into Chesterton High Street through Chesterton, across Elizabeth Way and on down Chesterton Road, past Mitcham's corner and Jesus lock, left into Magdelene Street and over the river, left again into Round Church Street, right into into Park Street, left into Jesus Lane down to the roundabout, right into Emmanuel Street, right and left into the next part of Emmanuel Street, and left into St Andrew's Street.

On to Mill Road (we're not yet clear if it goes Park Terrace/ Parkside or Regent Street/ Gonville Place. All the way down Mill Road to the end, right onto the ring road (called Perne Rd at the point), next left into Birdwood Road, right into Walpole Road and right again onto Cherry Hinton Rd to get back to the ring road. Left back onto the ring road (now called Mowbray Road) and from there straight to Addenbrooke's.

Return journey is basically the same except that from St Andrew's Road it goes up Hobson Street to get to Jesus Lane, rather than via Emmanuel Street and then around Milton on the A10 bypass to get back to Landbeach Road.

9 Cambridge-Milton-Ely-Littleport

The number 9 buses run from Milton to Cambridge and back every hour during the day from Monday to Saturday and there is an evening service. It's a better choice if you're going into Cambridge city centre and can plan ahead as it goes by a more direct route than the Citi 2 so is somewhat quicker.

They go by way of Milton Road (making good use of the bus lane), Mitcham's Corner and across the river into Drummer Street. The last bus home is at 23:10.

The return journey follows the same route in reverse and continues to Ely and Littleport.

The County Council has the timetable available on their web site in PDF format here.

19 Cambridge-Milton-Ely-Chatteris-March-Wisbech

The number 19 is the Sunday equivalent of the number 9. There are six services north and five south at roughly two hourly intervals.

The County Council has the timetable available on their web site in PDF format here.

Using Cambridge Buses

We have already recommended the Dayrider ticket. This offers unlimited travel for a day within Cambridge and the satellite villages and it's well worth considering, especially if you want to change buses.

For example as you'll will have seen above the Citi 2 service is a lot more frequent than the 9 but takes a "round the houses" route so if you're going to Addenbrooke's it's a frustratingly long journey.

A better option may be to take the Citi 2 to Emmanuel Street, hop off there and catch the next Park and Ride bus. Your Dayrider is valid on that bus. It stops at Addenbrooke's on the way to Babraham Road.

A lot of villagers also walk, cycle or drive to Cowley Road Park and Ride and pick up the bus from there. It's cheaper than the Dayrider fare although only if you walk or cycle.
